“A big part of my life I have tried to capture my identity in one way or another. Mostly through some kind of social media profile or professional persona. While this may have had some satisfying short-term results, I always ended up feeling alienated and distressed by the boundaries which I put upon myself. Instead of being fixed, I always perceived my personality as having a fluid quality – constantly changing according to the circumstances and point of view.”
By reproducing an abstract Instagram feed I explored my struggle with capturing my ever-changing creative identity. Through interconnected fragments pulled from my life, I touch upon the different influences behind my struggle.
The format of a feed allowed me to play out the fantasy of being a “successful” creative. I had a lot of fun creating the comments of people mostly busy with themselves. It made me aware of the paradox inherent in looking for connection through this medium.
The visuals are from marbled paper sheets I made and, at least for me, conceptually visualize the fluid identity caught in form.
