POLYGON (Project, 2022)
“During the later months of 2021, I started experimenting with crafting my own canvasses. Before then, I had always bought the standard canvasses you can buy ready-made in any art store, but now I wanted to take this matter into my own hands. Pretty soon I got bored with making the same old rectangle shape again and again. Therefor I decided to try something new and go crazy with the shape. I ended up making a canvas that was bend and twisted in all kinds of ways, even coming off the wall in some 3D kind of way. Instantly, for reasons I could not yet fully grasp, I got fascinated by the polygon shape of the canvas.”
With the help of Jilles de Man, we created five custom shaped canvasses which took us two full days of work to finish.
Polygon is a fictitious mission-driven startup that aims to revolutionize the art-world by producing custom shaped canvasses on demand and consequently challenge the standardization that underlies most art: the rectangle.
The Polygon project consists of five custom shaped canvasses and three limited edition handcrafted brochures with unique hand-painted covers. The Polygon company brochure contains a professional product offering and gives a glimpse behind the scenes by showing the creation-process.
With this project I investigate the relationship between standardization and innovation and how it influences the art-world.
